The Conscious Kitten: Growing Resilience — Part 2: Immune Maturity

A kitten doesn’t come into the world with a ready immune system — it builds one, piece by piece, starting with something as tiny as bacteria.

When a kitten is born, it’s a blank slate — sterile, untouched by the outside world. But almost immediately, something beautiful happens. As it nurses, is licked clean, and nestles up against its mother, she shares with it a whole invisible world of microbes. Researchers like Chan et al. (2013) and Zakošek Pipan et al. (2020) have described how this early maternal transfer — especially into the gut — lays the foundation for the kitten’s immune system.

The gut microbiome doesn’t just help with digestion; it teaches the immune system how to tell the difference between what matters and what doesn’t. The Merck Veterinary Manual (Aiello & Moses, 2016) explains that when that balance is thrown off — say, by separating kittens too early or feeding artificial diets too soon — you can end up with immune systems that overreact (allergies) or underreact (frequent infections). And recent work, like that by Zakošek Pipan et al., has made it clear how stressful the weaning period can be, just when kittens are most in need of resilience.

Nature, thankfully, gives kittens a backup plan: the mother’s colostrum. Casal et al. (1996) showed that kittens are born almost without antibodies of their own — colostrum provides them with a temporary immune shield. But here’s the tricky part: those maternal antibodies that protect them can also get in the way of vaccinations. The ABCD and WSAVA vaccination guidelines (Day et al., 2016) explain that maternal antibodies can block vaccines until they naturally fade, which usually happens around 14–16 weeks. Jäkel et al. (2012) found that even after following the usual vaccine plan, around 37% of kittens didn’t have a fully protective immune response by 20 weeks. This is the reason why the 16week boosters are so important .

Some breeders go even further, using something called titre testing — basically a blood test to check if the kitten’s immune system is standing on its own or still leaning on mom’s help. Not everyone does it, but it can offer useful clues about when the best time to vaccinate is and whether the vaccines have done their job.

And  let’s not forget another big piece of the puzzle: stress— a piece that’s easy to overlook but, in my experience, just as important. Research shows that early-life stress doesn’t just shape behaviour. It shapes health. Weaning, separation, moving to a new home — all of these can affect the immune system, sometimes knocking it off balance at the worst moment. Studies like those by Zakošek Pipan et al. (2020) have shown that weaning stress can lower protective antibodies and leave kittens more prone to illness. It’s one of the biggest reasons I believe in giving kittens the gift of time.

These studies have completely shaped how I work. It was never  just about calendars or protocols; it’s about watching the kitten, respecting its pace, and honoring the quiet, invisible work going on inside.

It’s not about holding on longer just for the sake of it.

It’s about giving them enough. Enough time. Enough calm. Enough foundation. So that when they finally leave, they go into the world whole, steady, and ready for the life ahead.
